MARC A. POUHÉ Stars as Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice"
Austin Shakespeare will bring the romance, comedy and dramatic clashes of The Merchant of Venice to the Sheffield Zilker Hillside Theater. Produced in collaboration with the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department, Shakespeare’s play will be performed under the stars from May 9 – May 26 on Thursdays – Sundays at 8 pm, with a preview performance on Wednesday, May 8. The Merchant of Venice will be set in the Belle Époque of 1890s Italy characterized by beautiful women and flashy gentlemen.
Shylock will be played by Marc Pouhé* as a Black Jew in an unusual twist. Austin Shakespeare alumna Gwendolyn Kelso* will appear as Portia. Returning actors include: Keith Paxton, Devin Finn, Max Green, Patrick Schmidt, Christopher Gonzalez, Sidd Kumar, Valoneecia Tolbert & Emily Christine Smith. New to Austin Shakespeare: Zach Barrett, Nick Ivons, Brennan Patrick & Michael Connally. Directed by Ann Ciccolella.

The audience is encouraged to bring blankets, low chairs, and a picnic to enjoy their evening on the grassy hillside. Some chairs are available. Zilker Hillside Theater is fully accessible to all audience members. There is a wheelchair-accessible area near the stage. Smoking, styrofoam and glass containers are prohibited in all City of Austin parks.
